Équateur : découverte macabre de cinq têtes sur une plage de Puerto Lopez
The beach resort of Puerto Lopez, usually popular for whale watching, was the scene of a horrific discovery this Sunday. Five human heads were found tied to posts facing the ocean. A threatening message at the scene explicitly targeted groups that extort money from locals (known locally as "vacuna").
This tragedy is part of an unprecedented wave of violence in Ecuador.
At the end of December, the province of Manabí had already been plunged into mourning by the massacre of nine people. Wedged between Colombia and Peru, the country has become the scene of bloody clashes between local gangs affiliated with Mexican and Colombian cartels for control of the cocaine trade.
