Afrique du Sud : Interception spectaculaire de 150 scorpions venimeux à l'aéroport du Cap
A 28-year-old traveler was arrested on Friday, June 12, 2026, at Cape Town International Airport as he attempted to leave the country with a most unusual and dangerous cargo: 150 live scorpions concealed in his suitcases.
Thanks to precise intelligence, South African law enforcement had a description of the suspect before his arrival at the airport. The man was intercepted just before boarding. During a search of his luggage, police discovered the venomous arachnids hidden among his clothing. Investigators have not yet released the smuggler's final destination.
This seizure is a reminder of the scale of poaching in South Africa, a true sanctuary of global biodiversity. While large mammals like elephants and rhinoceroses often capture media attention, criminal networks are increasingly targeting small reptiles, insects, and pangolins to fuel an extremely lucrative international black market.
