Afrique du Sud : L’armée déployée à Johannesburg pour briser la loi des gangs
A month after President Cyril Ramaphosa's announcement, the South African army began patrols in Greater Johannesburg on Wednesday. Supporting the police, these troops are tasked with pacifying neighborhoods ravaged by turf wars and endemic crime, which claims the lives of approximately 60 people every day in the country.
On the ground, the operations are forceful: home raids, systematic searches, and the hunt for weapons and narcotics. For residents, like Rabia Williams, who imposes a personal curfew on herself starting at 5:30 p.m., this presence is a relief. However, the deployment—planned to last a year and extend to five provinces—is not universally accepted. While some residents are calling for a permanent military presence, the opposition and several experts point to the soldiers' lack of training for civilian law enforcement missions.
