Afrique du Sud : Maintien en détention pour Kemi Seba, l'audience reportée

Pan-African activist Kemi Seba, recently arrested in South Africa, appeared before the Pretoria Court on Monday, April 20. The hearing, which lasted only about thirty minutes, resulted in the proceedings being postponed until April 29 .

The reasons for the postponement

The South African justice system has granted the prosecution's request for an additional delay for two main reasons:

  1. Home verification: Confirm the influencer's address in the territory.
  2. Document authentication: Ensure the validity of his Nigerien diplomatic passport (although the defense claims to have official proof from the Nigerien embassy).

Unexpected co-defendants

Kemi Seba is not appearing alone. Alongside him are:

  1. His son was also placed in pre-trial detention.
  2. François Van de Merwe , a figure of the Afrikaner far-right identitarian movement, is accused of assisting Kemi Seba in an attempt to illegally join Zimbabwe.

The defense strategy: Refugee status

To counter the charge of illegal immigration—the official reason for his arrest—the activist's lawyer confirmed the initiation of proceedings to obtain political refugee status . If successful, this application would legalize his presence on South African soil.

Benin increases pressure for extradition

In parallel with the influencer's legal troubles in Pretoria, the Beninese authorities have officially expressed their intention to repatriate him to stand trial.

The grievances of the Beninese justice system (CRIET)

The special prosecutor of the Court for the Repression of Economic Crimes and Terrorism (CRIET) reiterated that Kemi Seba is the subject of two international arrest warrants for:

  1. Money laundering.
  2. Apology for crimes and incitement to hatred.
  3. Alleged support for the attempted coup in Benin last December.

A request for provisional arrest

Cotonou has already contacted South African authorities to request that Kemi Seba's current detention be converted into a provisional arrest pending formal extradition . Although a Beninese diplomat was present at Monday's hearing, the extradition issue has not yet been raised before the South African judge.
