Algérie : décès de l’ancien président Liamine Zéroual à 84 ans
Algeria has lost one of its most prominent political figures of the modern era. Former President Liamine Zéroual died in Algiers on the night of March 28-29, 2026, at the age of 84, following a long illness.
His disappearance led the authorities to declare three days of national mourning and to fly flags at half-mast throughout the country and at diplomatic missions abroad.
A former military officer, Liamine Zéroual became president in 1994, in an extremely difficult context marked by civil war. Elected in 1995 in the first multi-party presidential election, he strove to promote dialogue with Islamist movements while trying to stabilize the country. Known for his caution and discretion, he chose to step down in 1999, allowing for early elections won by Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
Throughout his presidency, Liamine Zéroual was perceived as a relatively uncontroversial figure, respected for his sense of responsibility and his rare decision not to cling to power. After leaving office, he withdrew from active political life, but remained a respected and influential figure in the country.
An official tribute will be paid before his burial in his hometown of Batna, where many Algerians are expected to gather to honor his memory. The death of Liamine Zéroual marks the end of an important chapter in Algeria's contemporary history and serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of his role during a crucial period in the country's history.
