Au moins 40 morts dans un accident de bus en Afrique du Sud

At least 40 people, including Malawians and Zimbabweans, were killed when a passenger bus rolled down an embankment in South Africa, a provincial transport minister said Monday.

The accident occurred about 90 km from the border on Sunday when the bus driver apparently lost control of the vehicle, which was heading to Zimbabwe, said the transport minister of the northeastern Limpopo province, Violet Mathye.

Rescue workers are still working at the scene, but 40 bodies have been confirmed so far, Mathye told the Newzroom Afrika news channel. Among the victims was a 10-month-old girl, she said.

At least 38 people have been hospitalized and rescuers are searching for more victims, the minister told eNCA, an online news channel.

The bus was coming from the town of Gqeberha, located in southern South Africa, about 1,500 km from the accident. Its passengers included Malawians and Zimbabweans working in South Africa.

The accident could have been caused by driver fatigue or a mechanical problem, the minister said.

South Africa has a sophisticated and busy road network, with a high rate of road fatalities mainly attributable to speeding, reckless driving and the use of non-compliant vehicles.
