Bénin 2026 : Boni Yayi rompt le silence et critique vivement Patrice Talon

Former Beninese president Boni Yayi has broken his silence with a video widely circulated on social media. In it, he levels serious accusations against his successor, Patrice Talon, regarding the upcoming 2026 presidential election.

Mr. Yayi accuses Patrice Talon of pursuing a "systematic policy of excluding the opposition." He claims that his party, Les Démocrates, is the target of a "destabilization plan," accusing the presidential camp of attempting to poach his members of parliament and senior officials.

The former head of state recalls that, according to him, "since 2016, the opposition has been systematically excluded from all elections, except in 2023", practices which "weaken the democratic structure".

Referring to his closed-door meeting with President Talon on October 24, Boni Yayi stated that he concluded that his successor "is gradually giving up on making Benin a state of law and democracy" and that he "no longer wants an opposition".

Boni Yayi's latest accusations concern the poaching of elected officials and personalities from his party by the majority, a scheme which, according to him, aims to annihilate the opposition.

In response, government spokesperson Wilfried Houngbédji called the former president's remarks "pathetic." Interviewed by RFI, he added that "Mr. Boni Yayi is acting like Mr. Yayi and refusing to take responsibility for the crisis shaking his party." For his part, Boni Yayi concluded his
