Bénin : Lancement de l'opération « Alligator », un exercice militaire urbain d'envergure

Faced with the persistent terrorist threat, the Beninese Armed Forces (FAB) are launching an offensive... through training. Starting this Wednesday, March 18, 2026 , the country is launching Exercise "Alligator," a large-scale maneuver designed to test the troops' responsiveness in an urban environment.

📍 Location and schedule

The exercise will take place from March 18 to 30, 2026 in five strategic cities in the south of the country:

  1. Cotonou
  2. Porto-Novo
  3. Ouidah
  4. Allada
  5. Grand-Popo

⚠️ Instructions to the public: Do not panic!

The military command is trying to reassure the public: the goal is to train "in a real-world environment" to guarantee optimal protection for citizens. Here's what you need to know for the coming days:

  1. Noise and movement: Explosions (blank ammunition only) and helicopter flyovers are to be expected.
  2. Traffic: Temporary roadblocks and traffic control measures will be in place. Drivers are advised to strictly adhere to all traffic signs.
  3. Interaction: The army encourages close contact with the public. "Don't hesitate to greet our soldiers!" the official statement specifies.

🛡️ A tense security situation

This exercise is not accidental. It comes after a start to the year marked by violent clashes:

  1. February/March 2026: A deadly attack claimed the lives of 15 Beninese soldiers.
  2. March 7, 2026: The army's response neutralized 17 terrorists during a foiled incursion attempt.

“Alligator” is part of a continuous preparation strategy, following the METROPOLIS and Shield (2025) exercises, which focused on the fight against jihadism and the liberation of hostages.

🤝 International Cooperation: Distinguished Guests

The launch of this operation coincides with a high-level diplomatic visit. General Fructueux Gbaguidi , Chief of the General Staff of Benin, is preparing to receive two strategic counterparts:

  1. General Fabien Mandon (France)
  2. General Lassina Doumbia (Ivory Coast)

Although presented as a courtesy visit, this meeting between the three chiefs of staff should strengthen regional military cooperation in the face of common security challenges.

Note: Remain vigilant regarding local security instructions and facilitate the passage of military convoys throughout the exercise.
