Bénin : Vers un nouveau Parlement sans opposition
For the second time under Patrice Talon's presidency, the Beninese National Assembly will be without opposition representatives. Despite receiving approximately 450,000 votes nationwide (17%), the Les Démocrates party failed to secure any seats, having not reached the legal threshold of 20% of the vote in each of the country's 24 constituencies.
The 109 seats in the chamber will therefore be shared between the two pillars of the presidential majority: the Progressive Union for Renewal (UP-R) with 60 deputies and the Republican Bloc (BR) with 49 elected members.
Guy Mitokpè, spokesperson for the Democrats, denounced an "exclusive and dangerous" electoral code, condemning a system designed, in his view, to weaken his party. Conversely, the majority welcomed "the expression of a popular choice." This lack of parliamentary representation automatically excludes the opposition from the next presidential election, as their application has already been deemed inadmissible by the CENI (National Independent Electoral Commission).
