Burkina : un incendie ravage 140 tonnes de coton à Bagassi, une perte colossale pour 80 producteurs
A violent fire destroyed more than 140 tons of cotton on Sunday in the village of Doussi, located in the rural commune of Bagassi, Balé province, Burkina Faso. This disaster particularly affected a cotton producers' group (GPC) of approximately 80 members, for whom the sale of the harvest represents their main source of annual income.
According to the daily newspaper Sidwaya, the fire broke out while the cotton was being stored awaiting sale. Despite the rapid intervention of a rescue team from the Bagassi mine, the highly flammable nature of the cotton made fire control operations extremely difficult.
At this stage, the cause of the fire remains unknown. An investigation has been launched to determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy.
This loss comes as national cotton seed production is expected to reach 336,812 tonnes for the 2025/2026 season, up 15% compared to the previous season, driven by an increase in cultivated areas, according to the Regional Programme for Integrated Cotton Production in Africa (PR-PICA).
