Cameroun: l'opposant Anicet Ekane est mort en détention (parti)

Cameroonian opposition leader Anicet Ekane died Monday morning in detention in Yaoundé, Valentin Dongmo, vice-president of the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (Manidem), the party he led, told AFP.

"Anicet Ekane died this morning in Yaoundé, where he had been transferred after his arrest in late October in Douala," he stated. The exact circumstances of his death remain unknown.

A figure of the nationalist left, president of Manidem, and supporter of the opposition leader Issa Tchiroma Bakary, Anicet Ekane was arrested on October 24 in Douala, on the eve of the official publication of the results of the presidential election, which re-elected Paul Biya, 92 years old and in power since 1982, for an eighth term.
