Cameroun : Maroua secouée par des manifestations post-électorales

Maroua, October 22, 2025 - The regional capital of the Far North, Maroua, was the scene of demonstrations this Wednesday morning, joining Garoua, Douala, Dschang and Yaoundé in the post-election protests.

Residents took to the streets to demand "the truth of the ballot boxes," chanting the name of Issa Tchiroma Bakary, the presidential candidate who has been claiming victory since October 14.

Law enforcement officers intervened to disperse the crowd, using tear gas.

This mobilization comes as the Constitutional Council has opened hearings in Yaoundé to resolve the post-election dispute. It also comes a day after the security measures issued by the Prefect of Diamaré, formally banning street demonstrations and the circulation of motorcycles in the city of Maroua.

Concerns and the threat of extremism

Tensions had been palpable since the day before. On Tuesday, October 21, a handwritten letter was delivered to the office of the governor of the Far North. The signatories, identifying themselves as young people from Maroua, expressed their "fed up" with poverty and the "theft of victory" by Issa Tchiroma Bakary, a candidate who, in their eyes, represents change.

More alarmingly, they threatened to join the Boko Haram terrorist group, active in the region, if they had to endure "another seven years" of the status quo. This morning's protests unfortunately appear to be turning this warning into concrete action.
