Cameroun/Drame à l’Extrême-Nord : 5 ressortissants tchadiens perdent la vie dans une collision près de Yagoua

The road once again brought grief to families on February 1, 2026. A particularly violent accident occurred near the town of Yagoua , on the road leading to Zébé, claiming the lives of five people and leaving many injured in critical condition.

The circumstances of the tragedy

The collision, which occurred around 4 p.m. near the Catholic church in Zébé, involved a public transport bus and a private vehicle registered in Chad.

According to initial findings at the scene, the excessive speed of the Chadian vehicle appears to be the primary cause of the head-on collision. The force of the impact left five of the occupants with no chance of survival.

A heavy human toll

The accident prompted an emergency response from emergency services and local authorities:

  1. Deaths: 5 deaths identified as Chadian nationals.
  2. Injured: At least a dozen seriously injured people, several of whom are in critical condition, have been evacuated to the Yagoua regional annex hospital.

The Yagoua–Bongor axis: a corridor under high tension

This latest tragedy highlights once again the dangers of the Yagoua–Bongor border road. Despite its vital role in trade between Cameroon and Chad, this road is the scene of numerous accidents due to several critical factors:

  1. The lack of signage near the border.
  2. Driver indiscipline (overloading and speeding).
  3. The mix of traffic , where freight trucks, motorcycles and pedestrians coexist.

Investigation and security measures

The gendarmerie and the services of the Ministry of Transport have opened a technical investigation to determine whether a mechanical failure or driver fatigue could have aggravated the situation.

In the face of this tragedy, local authorities reiterate their calls for caution and stress the urgent need to strengthen road safety measures in the Mayo-Danay department to protect users of this strategic corridor.
