Casques bleus visés au Liban : Le Ghana demande des comptes à l'ONU
Tensions are rising between Accra and international bodies. Following an Israeli attack that injured several of its peacekeepers in South Lebanon, the Ghanaian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially appealed to the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres.
As tensions escalate in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah, Ghana finds itself unwillingly on the front lines. A long-standing contributor to UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon), the country currently has a battalion of nearly 900 soldiers deployed in the region.
On March 6, a UN position in al-Qaouzah was targeted by missile fire. The toll was heavy for the Ghanaian contingent:
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun described the strike as a "direct attack." Ghana's diplomatic response was unequivocal. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ghanaian Foreign Minister, strongly condemned the act, which he considered a serious violation of international law.
"This aggression amounts to a war crime and violates the protections afforded to United Nations peacekeeping personnel." — Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana.
The Ghanaian government does not intend to let the matter rest. In its official protest to the UN, Accra demands:
This situation puts Ghana in a delicate position, illustrating the growing unease of African nations in the face of the expansion of the conflict in the Middle East.
