Coup de pression sur les radios privées en Guinée-Bissau
Guinea-Bissau's media landscape is experiencing unprecedented turmoil. Since Tuesday, March 31, 2026, the Ministry of Communication has ordered the immediate suspension of about ten private radio stations, including commercial, religious, and community stations. Officially, the authorities justify this drastic measure by citing the non-payment of operating license fees. This administrative crackdown has led to the sealing of several studios, plunging a portion of the country into a worrying information blackout, as radio remains the primary source of news for the majority of the population.
The crux of the conflict lies in the high cost of broadcasting rights, set at 5 million CFA francs per station, an amount deemed exorbitant by local media owners already struggling in a precarious economy. For many observers and press freedom organizations, this strict accounting masks a deeper political maneuver. While the country has been led by a transitional government since last November, the mass closure of independent media outlets comes just months before the general elections scheduled for December 6, 2026.
Faced with the outcry sparked by these suspensions, a first sign of appeasement seems to be emerging. This Thursday, April 2nd, the transitional Prime Minister ordered the provisional reopening of the affected stations after an emergency meeting with the Forum of Private Radio Stations. A technical committee has been established to renegotiate payment terms and adapt the licensing fees to the realities of the local advertising market. While this measure offers journalists a respite, it underscores the persistent fragility of the right to information during a period of political transition where every dissenting voice becomes a tool of the power struggle.
