Drame en Guinée : Onze morts dans l'éboulement d'une mine à Mandiana

The death toll is high in eastern Guinea following the collapse of an artisanal gold mine last Wednesday. The tragedy, located near Kondianakoro (Mandiana prefecture), claimed the lives of eleven people .

The sequence of events

The victims, mainly women, had gone to the site for a "washing and treatment of mining waste" operation. It was during this process that the walls of a shaft gave way under pressure, causing a massive landslide.

Human toll: Ten women died instantly, buried under tons of earth. A young man, initially injured, succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Response: Despite the efforts of Red Cross volunteers and rescue workers, no survivors could be pulled from the wreckage in time. The bodies were recovered several hours after the accident.

Persistent insecurity

This latest accident highlights once again the extreme dangers of artisanal gold mining in the savannah region. Amara Diallo, the local representative of the Red Cross, points out that while these tragedies are frequent due to a lack of safety measures and the precarious nature of the facilities, they unfortunately do not deter illegal mining.
