Eau potable au Togo : Des progrès réels, mais la fracture sociale et rurale persiste

Ensuring clean water and decent sanitation infrastructure for every Togolese citizen by 2030 remains a major challenge for the government and its partners. While efforts are bearing fruit, the findings of the latest Common Country Analysis (CCA) for SDG 6 reveal striking disparities based on place of residence and wealth level.

In 2025, Togo's overall score for this objective reached 52.2 out of 100 (compared to 51.9 in 2021). A modest increase that masks very heterogeneous realities on the ground.

đź’§ Drinking water: Global access is increasing, but not for everyone

The national rate of access to drinking water is encouraging: it increased from 65.1% in 2017 to 71% in 2022. However, this average masks a significant social divide:

  1. Non-poor households: More than 73% have access to drinking water.
  2. Poor households: This rate collapses to 59.6% .

The immense challenge of rural areas

In the countryside, having a tap at home is still the exception: only 5.5% of rural households have one inside their home or yard. For the others, it's all about improvisation.

  1. 31.1% get their water from public fountains.
  2. 23.2% depend on the neighborhood.
  3. 12.6% consume sachet water.
  4. 12.9% drink water from unprotected sources (rivers, open wells), exposing themselves to serious health risks.

đźš˝ Sanitation: The poor relation of basic services

While access to water is progressing, the development of toilets and hygiene remains stagnant. Fewer than one in five Togolese have basic facilities, despite a slight national increase ( 19.2% in 2022 compared to 16.1% in 2017 ). Here, the geographical and economic divide is even more stark:

Population category Access rates to clean toilets
Well-off households 51.7%
Poor households 18.4%
Rural environment (global) Barely 9.4%

In short, almost all rural areas of Togo remain deprived of basic hygiene facilities.

🎯 Heading towards 2030: Towards universal access?

To get back on track and correct these deep inequalities, the Togolese state is accelerating its investments based on two strategic roadmaps:

  1. The National Drinking Water Supply Plan.
  2. The Water Master Plan for Greater Lomé.
The ultimate ambition: To achieve universal access by 2030 so that no citizen, from urban centers to the most remote villages, is left behind.

To monitor the progress of the projects and consult the updated indicators, the data is accessible in real time on the official platform of the Ministry of Water and Sanitation of Togo.
