Forbes 2026 : Le Panthéon des Fortunes Africaines

Forbes ' annual verdict has just been released. The 2026 edition of the ranking of the continent's billionaires confirms a strong trend: African wealth remains firmly rooted in traditional industrial pillars such as cement, mining, energy and telecoms, while leaving a prominent place for international luxury.

The Top Three: The Unrivaled Dangote

For the second consecutive year, Nigerian businessman Aliko Dangote tops the rankings. The head of the Dangote Group is consolidating his empire thanks to his mega-refinery in Lagos (650,000 barrels/day), propelling his fortune to over $13 billion .

He is closely followed by two major figures from South Africa:

  1. Johann Rupert ($10 billion) : The luxury magnate, head of Richemont (Cartier, Montblanc), is benefiting from the resilience of the high-end sector.
  2. Nicky Oppenheimer (> $8 billion) : The historical heir to De Beers diamonds continues to grow his capital after exiting the mining sector.

Analysis of the Top 10 by Fortune and Sector

9 Mohammed Al-Amoudi Ethiopia/Saudi Arabia ~3 billion dollars Energy, Agriculture

Key takeaways from the 2026 vintage

  1. The Nigerian powerhouse: With three representatives at the top (Dangote, Adenuga, Rabiu), Nigeria remains the main driver of the creation of great fortunes.
  2. Mining and energy stability: Despite global ecological transitions, natural resources (oil, gold, diamonds) remain the foundation of the most valued assets.
  3. Maghreb resilience: Despite sometimes complex legal and political contexts, figures like Issad Rebrab manage to keep their conglomerates afloat.
Note: This ranking highlights that wealth on the continent still largely depends on the control of critical infrastructure and the processing of raw materials.
