Ghana : La filière cacao étranglée par une dette de 750 millions $

The Ghanaian cocoa sector is going through a period of great turbulence. The Licensed Buyers Association (LBC) is sounding the alarm over a colossal payment arrears reaching $750 million .

The causes of the crisis:

Production in decline: Two consecutive harvests have been ravaged by the swollen shoot virus and capricious weather.
Price crash: After a historic high of $12,000/t in 2024, prices fell to around $4,000/t in early 2026, weighed down by weak global demand.

Accra's response: To inject liquidity, the government readjusted prices in mid-February 2026. A financial rescue plan, potentially including the issuance of cocoa bonds , is under consideration to stabilize buyers' cash flow and secure export revenues from this pillar of the national economy.
