Le Ghana instaure le visa gratuit pour les Africains : Ce qu'il faut retenir

Ghana has taken a historic step towards continental integration. President John Dramani Mahama officially announced free visas for all African nationals, coupled with the rollout of a new e-Visa system.

Here are the key points to understand this reform which will come into effect on May 25, 2026 , on the occasion of Africa Day.

1. Free of charge, but not exemption from procedure

Contrary to popular belief, the elimination of fees does not mean the end of formalities. Foreign Minister Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa clarified two key points:

  1. Zero fees: Africans will no longer pay consular fees to enter the territory.
  2. Controls remain in place: Visa applications are still mandatory. Travelers must still submit their applications through official channels.

2. Generalization of the e-Visa

Starting next month, a secure digital platform will become mandatory for all travelers , whether African or not. This digitalization initiative aims to simplify procedures while modernizing Ghanaian administration.

3. Enhanced security through technology

The government is not sacrificing security on the altar of mobility. To filter entry, the e-Visa platform will be coupled with state-of-the-art surveillance tools:

  1. API-PNR System: Advanced analysis of passenger data.
  2. International interconnection: Direct access to global criminal databases.
  3. Right of refusal: Entry is never automatic. Any profile deemed risky or with a criminal record will be systematically refused.

4. Why now?

While the idea was first raised in 2024 by former President Nana Akufo-Addo, it encountered technical limitations. Today, thanks to close collaboration between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, the Interior, and Transport , Ghana has the necessary technological infrastructure to ensure the system's reliability.

The objective is clear: To make Ghana a model of mobility in Africa, proving that open borders can go hand in hand with high-level security control.
