Le Ghana mise sur la carte d’identité « portefeuille » pour transformer son économie

Ghana is poised to take a major step forward in the digitization of its government services. Driven by the National Identification Authority (INA), the biometric identity card is evolving into a truly universal payment tool . This system will allow citizens to make purchases (online and in stores) and withdraw cash in over 200 countries.

A lever for transparency and growth

This innovation is not only aimed at user convenience; it addresses crucial macroeconomic issues:

  1. Cash reduction: By limiting the circulation of cash, the State gains visibility into actual transactions.
  2. Monetary and fiscal policy: A formalized economy allows for better tax collection and more precise control of the money supply.
  3. Financial inclusion: It facilitates access to public and banking services for populations that have been marginalized until now.

The cybersecurity challenge

Despite the enthusiasm, some are raising concerns about digital risks. Economist Patrick Asuming points out that current security standards may prove insufficient to protect against cyberattacks or the risk of data misuse by authorities. A robust legal framework is currently being discussed between the National Information Technology Agency (INA), the banking sector, and the government to secure this technological leap.

Africa, champion of digital "Leapfrogging"

This Ghanaian project is part of a broader trend across the continent. According to IN Groupe (a French specialist in digital identity), the adoption of these technologies could boost the GDP of African countries by 3 to 13% .

The "Leapfrog" concept: Just as mobile telephony supplanted fixed-line telephony, digital identity allows African nations to "skip stages" of development to directly adopt the most modern infrastructures.

Key figures for the sector in Africa:

Status/Share of African countries
Already equipped with digital identity 35%
Currently being deployed > 33%
Market leaders South Africa, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, Kenya

Export to Sheets

By collaborating with international partners, Ghana and its neighbors are transforming sovereign identity into a true engine of economic growth and social inclusion.
