L'Ouganda s'enfonce dans le silence avant un scrutin sous haute tension
The digital curtain has fallen on Uganda. As the country prepares to vote this Thursday, the Kampala government has shut down the internet, blocking WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), and global access to the web. President Yoweri Museveni, who is seeking a seventh term, claims this measure is preventative. The opposition and the international community consider it a blatant act of censorship.
Key points of the crisis:
- Information control: The suspension, officially intended to prevent "incitement to violence", mainly prevents observers and journalists from reporting irregularities in real time.
- Climate of intimidation: Between the massive deployment of the army in the streets of the capital and the suspension of civil rights NGOs, the election is taking place in an atmosphere of fear.
- Diplomatic isolation: Despite calls for calm from the UN, the government seems to favour the hardline approach, identical to that used in 2021.
