Lutte antiterroriste : Le Nigeria déploie des troupes au Bénin face à la menace jihadiste
Abuja is stepping up its efforts. On Monday, May 18, 2026, the Chief of the Nigerian Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, officially announced the deployment of troops to the Republic of Benin. This initiative is part of a regional security strategy aimed at curbing the expansion of armed groups in West Africa.
To avoid any confusion, the military authorities clarified that the presence of Nigerian troops in Benin responds to two different strategic imperatives:
Faced with the emergency, the Beninese and Nigerian general staffs are now coordinating joint operations , particularly along the border with Niger, identified as a major infiltration corridor.
"This deployment aims to strengthen intelligence sharing and strategic partnerships in order to limit the freedom of action of armed groups in the region." — Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu , at the bi-annual army conference in Abuja.
Benin, which has faced bloody incursions from Burkina Faso and Niger since 2019 (including a particularly deadly attack in April 2025), has found a powerful ally in Nigeria. Nigeria, itself affected by this terrorist contagion on its borders, has opted for collective action despite its own internal security challenges. To support this effort, Abuja has also announced a reorganization of its forces through the creation of new military units within its territory.
