Madagascar : l’ancien président Andry Rajoelina déchu de sa nationalité malgache
Malagasy authorities have officially revoked the Malagasy nationality of former President Andry Rajoelina. The Official Journal of the Republic of Madagascar, dated October 24, 2025, publishes a decree signed by Prime Minister Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo, ratifying this decision. The text notes the loss of Malagasy nationality of the former head of state, who held dual French and Malagasy nationality.
The revelation in 2023 of his French nationality, acquired in 2014—officially to facilitate his children's schooling—had sparked a heated debate during the presidential campaign. This dual nationality had called into question his legitimacy and eligibility for the highest office.
The decree is based on Article 42 of the Malagasy Nationality Code, amended by the law of July 21, 1960, which provides for the automatic loss of nationality in the event of the voluntary acquisition of another. As a result, Andry Rajoelina also loses his civil and political rights within the national territory. The text specifies that the measure takes effect upon publication, and instructs the Keeper of the Seals, Minister of Justice, to ensure its implementation. This decree thus confirms the definitive loss of the former president's Malagasy nationality.
This announcement comes just days after Andry Rajoelina's departure from the country, which occurred following a youth movement supported by part of the army, which had demanded his resignation on October 12. The former head of state left Madagascar after several weeks of intense political tension.
