Mauritanie : Vague de limogeages et poursuites judiciaires après un rapport accablant de la Cour des comptes
In Mauritania, the government made a radical decision during an extraordinary cabinet meeting held this Tuesday. Following the findings of a report by the Court of Auditors, 30 officials, including several senior civil servants, were referred to court. Among them, 20 senior officials were immediately dismissed. The other 10, although named in the reports, currently hold no official positions.
According to information obtained by sources close to the case and relayed by the media outlet Al-Akhbar, this operation follows clear instructions from President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who demanded strict implementation of the recommendations of the state's control and inspection bodies. This stance is in line with his reaction to the publication of the 2022-2023 report of the Court of Auditors, which revealed an embezzlement estimated at more than 410 billion ouguiyas, or approximately one billion dollars. Faced with this scandal of unprecedented scale, the president had already affirmed that "no one would be above the law," calling on the control institutions to fully exercise their prerogatives.
These decisions mark a turning point in public governance in Mauritania and send a strong signal, both to public opinion and to officials in the administration, of the authorities' stated desire to break with impunity in the management of public funds.
