Miracle à Garoua : Une tumeur de 2 kg extraite du cerveau d'une lycéenne

February 20, 2026 will remain a date etched in the history of the Garoua Regional Hospital. A medical team, led by neurosurgeons Ignatius Esene and Nathalie Ghomsi , performed an extraordinary operation by removing a brain tumor weighing more than two kilograms from a 16-year-old girl.

Although the patient, Monique, is now recovering and preparing to return to high school, this medical success highlights the persistent flaws in the Cameroonian healthcare system.

An ordeal born from a simple "pimple"

It all started in a small town in Mayo-Rey. What seemed to be just a small, benign lump on the young girl's skull turned into an ordeal lasting more than a year.

"It started as a pimple, then it grew," says Monique.

Handicapped by increasingly unbearable pain, she had to face an uphill battle before reaching the specialized unit.

Solidarity in the service of survival

The delay in treatment was not only medical, it was financial . Lacking health insurance and the means to pay for the trip to the hospital, the family had to wait many weeks after the initial diagnosis by a rural nurse.

To make the operation possible, a genuine chain of solidarity was established at the hospital:

  1. Fundraising: Organization of an internal fundraising drive by staff.
  2. Donors: Contribution from the director of the establishment and the social service.
  3. Intervention: 6 hours of complex surgery and 4 blood transfusions.

A cry for help for neurosurgery in Cameroon

Despite the success, Dr. Ignatius Esene refuses to become complacent. For him, Monique's case is symptomatic of a glaring lack of medical care in northern Cameroon.

Key figures of the medical challenge:

Resource Current situation
Specialists Approximately 30 neurosurgeons for the entire country.
Imaging (North) Only 2 MRIs and 7 scanners for the entire area.
Accessibility Exhausting distances to reach the reference centers.

The appeal to the authorities

The neurosurgeon urges public authorities to act on two urgent levers:

  1. Technical strengthening: Modernizing diagnostic tools in regional hospitals.
  2. Social protection: Extending Universal Health Coverage (UHC) so that money is no longer an obstacle to survival.

Although Monique has been saved, she will remain under close medical supervision. Her story serves as a reminder that every year, more than 300,000 new cases of brain tumors are detected worldwide, requiring a responsiveness that the current system still struggles to provide for everyone.
