The city of Tahoua, a strategic crossroads in southwestern Niger, was the scene of violent clashes on the night of Sunday 8 to Monday 9 March 2026. An attempted "terrorist" incursion targeting air base 401 , located within the local airport grounds, was neutralized by the defense forces.

Course of the attack

Around 3:00 AM, assailants arriving on motorcycles launched their attack, specifically targeting a drone shelter . Residents reported heavy gunfire and explosions heard throughout the city.

1. Human toll: There were a few injuries among the army, while "several" attackers were eliminated.
2. Arrests: According to the Nigerien Press Agency (ANP), five suspects were arrested following the fighting.
3. Current situation: Calm returned in the early morning and search operations are underway.

A strategic site under high surveillance

The Tahoua drone base, operational since 2022, plays a crucial role in monitoring the borders with Mali and Nigeria. Although the Tahoua region regularly experiences pressure from armed groups (jihadists in the north, bandits in the south), the urban center itself had remained relatively untouched until now.

A tense security situation

This incident is part of a resurgence of attacks against airport infrastructure in Niger. At the end of January, Niamey airport was already targeted by the Islamic State in the Sahel (IS). Despite the coup d'état of July 2023 and the promises of the ruling military junta, the country remains plagued by persistent instability caused by:

1. ISIS and JNIM (Al-Qaeda) in the west.
2. Transborder criminal groups from Nigeria.

The regional governor visited the site on Monday morning to assess the extent of the damage and reaffirm the authorities' control of the area.
