As the January 2027 general elections approach, the Nigerian political landscape is undergoing a profound transformation. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is now emerging as the central pole of the opposition, attracting historical figures, the latest being the influential Rabiu Kwankwaso .

Rabiu Kwankwaso's strategic rallying

Former Kano State governor and NNPP leader Rabiu Kwankwaso officially joined the ADC earlier this week. This move follows a major political split: his protégé and current Kano governor betrayed him in January 2026 to join the ruling party (APC) of President Bola Tinubu.

The arrival of Kwankwaso is a major asset for the coalition. A true electoral force in the Muslim-majority north, he won a majority of the votes in his region during the 2023 presidential election. The ADC is already reporting a massive increase in membership following this prominent figure.

An opposition "Dream Team"

The party, which is preparing to hold its national convention, increasingly resembles a united front of former rivals. Kwankwaso joins other heavyweights who have already taken the plunge:

1. Peter Obi (former Labour Party)
2. Atiku Abubakar (former PDP)

In recent days, Kano has become the nerve center of this alliance. Abubakar and Obi traveled there personally to seal this union with Kwankwaso, demonstrating a willingness to form a united front against the current majority.

The collapse of the PDP

Kwankwaso's defection is not an isolated case. This Tuesday, the governor of Bauchi State also left the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to join the ADC.

This political hemorrhage underscores the decline of the once hegemonic PDP. The party's disintegration benefits the two dominant forces:

1. The APC (power) : recently regained 14 deputies.
2. The ADC (opposition) : welcomed 9 deputies and consolidated its position as the main alternative for 2027.

The challenge: By bringing together the main candidates of 2023 under a single banner, the ADC hopes to avoid the dispersion of votes that benefited Bola Tinubu in the last election.
