Political earthquake at the top of the Senegalese state. The President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has officially terminated the functions of his Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, as well as his entire government.
The announcement was made this Friday evening via an official statement from the presidency, read live on national television (RTS) by the minister secretary general of the presidency.
"By decree No. 2026-1128 of May 22, 2026, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Bassirou Diomaye Faye, terminated the functions of Mr. Ousmane Sonko, Prime Minister, and consequently those of the members of the government."
Pending the appointment of a new ministerial team, members of the outgoing government have been tasked with handling current affairs.
While the news had a bombshell effect on the Senegalese political landscape, the outgoing Prime Minister reacted almost instantly, displaying total serenity.
It was on his Facebook account that Ousmane Sonko broke his silence with a message tinged with relief:
" Alhamdulillah. Tonight I will sleep with a light heart in the Keur Gorgui neighborhood. "
This departure marks a major turning point for the current government, paving the way for a large-scale ministerial reshuffle, the details of which are yet to be revealed.
