Sénégal: le massacre de tirailleurs par l'armée française en 1944 a été "prémédité" et "camouflé" (rapport officiel)

The 1944 massacre of African riflemen in Senegal by the French army demanding their pay was "premeditated" and "covered up," and its toll is probably largely underestimated, denounces a White Paper submitted to the Senegalese president on Thursday, an exclusive copy of which was obtained by AFP.

The trauma of the massacre of these riflemen from several West African countries (Senegal, Ivory Coast, Guinea, Upper Volta - now Burkina Faso), repatriated after having fought for the French army in Europe during the Second World War and who were demanding payment of back pay before returning home, is still acute in Senegal and the other countries concerned.

According to the French colonial authorities' assessment at the time, at least 35 riflemen were killed during the massacre at the Thiaroye camp, near Dakar, where they were being held. This figure is likely a significant underestimate, according to the committee of researchers who authored the report, for whom the "most credible estimates put the figure at 300 to 400" dead.
