Sénégal : Plusieurs morts dans l’éboulement d’une mine d’or artisanale
A tragedy occurred on the night of December 17-18, 2025, at an artisanal gold mining site in Kharakhéna , a gold-mining village in the commune of Bembou , in the Kédougou region of southeastern Senegal. A landslide caught workers inside a mine shaft, resulting in a heavy death toll.
Initially, rescuers recovered six bodies of victims , while several others were seriously injured in the collapse that occurred in the early hours of the morning.
Among the injured, one died around 2 a.m. despite the efforts of medical teams, bringing the number of people killed in this accident to at least seven , a local official told the Senegalese Press Agency.
Rescue and damage assessment operations are continuing at the site, where teams are also working to secure the area to prevent any further incidents. An investigation has been launched to determine the precise circumstances of the collapse, as working conditions at artisanal mining sites remain particularly dangerous.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the risks associated with informal gold mining in the Kédougou region, where numerous workers, often without adequate safety equipment, toil in the hope of finding gold. Local authorities have reiterated their calls to strengthen preventative measures at these high-risk sites to avoid such tragedies recurring.
