The posting on social media of a video showing the rape of a young woman in Mogadishu has sparked outrage in Somalia. In response to what authorities have called a "barbaric" act, protests have erupted in the capital demanding justice and challenging the taboo surrounding sexual violence.

A filmed attack that sparks horror

On the weekend of June 20-21, 2026, several men raped a young woman in Mogadishu, filmed their crime, and then shared the images online. On Monday, June 22, the Somali Minister of Family and Human Rights strongly condemned this "barbaric act."

The street and civil society are demanding accountability

Starting on Sunday, June 21, several dozen women took to the streets of the capital to express their anger. Their demands focused on two main areas:

  1. To obtain justice for the victim of this attack.
  2. To put an end to the omerta and the code of silence that structurally surround sexual violence in the country.

For Samira Gaid, a researcher at the Balqiis Institute and former advisor to the Prime Minister, this tragedy highlights an institutional failure:

"Behind this case lies the general failure of all the systems that should protect [Somali women]," she lamented on the social network X.

Promise of an investigation and a legal vacuum

In response to the scandal, the Attorney General's office reacted on Sunday by announcing the opening of a "thorough investigation." It ordered the cooperation of all security forces to quickly capture the perpetrators, promising exemplary punishments.

However, this case runs up against a fragile legal reality:

  1. Lack of federal law: Somalia still lacks strict national legislation against sexual violence.
  2. A distorted text: A protective bill was drafted in 2018 with the UN. After two years of debate, the version finally adopted was significantly gutted and remains, according to Amnesty International, almost unenforceable on the ground.
