Nicknamed the "Butcher of El-Fasher" for his cruelty, the top commander of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Abu Lou Lou , is back on the Sudanese battlefield. Born al-Fateh Abdullah Idriss, this paramilitary leader had been arrested by his own side last October under international pressure.

Accused of mass executions of civilians during the capture of the capital of North Darfur, he was supposed to be tried by his superiors and was subject to UN sanctions. According to revelations by Reuters , he was ultimately released secretly.

The atrocities were filmed and shared on social media.

Abu Lou Lou had become infamous for staging himself in gruesome videos. These videos showed him humiliating and then executing civilians on the ground during the fall of El-Fasher. Faced with the global outcry provoked by these images, the leadership of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) was forced to react.

  1. Staging of the arrest: The paramilitaries had released images of the handcuffed commander being transferred to Shala prison.
  2. Disciplinary board: Although he appeared before a disciplinary body, the promised justice was clearly not served.

An orderly release at the highest level of the FSR

According to Reuters , the release order came directly from Abdel-Rahim Daglo , the brother of General Hemedti and number two in the FSR.

Abu Lou Lou's new mission: He has reportedly been sent to the Kordofan region to boost the morale of the paramilitary troops. His one and only instruction? To post nothing on social media.

The denial from the paramilitary authorities

Faced with these accusations, the government installed by the FSR ( Tasis ) is trying to save face. A spokesperson formally denied the commander's release.

  1. The paramilitary government claims that Abu Lou Lou and other officers accused of abuses are still behind bars .
  2. Tasis assures that they will appear before a special court, reiterating its "absolute commitment" to bringing to justice the perpetrators of crimes against civilian populations.
