Souveraineté alimentaire : Le Gabon lance son plan « 100% Poulet Local »
With the ban on poultry imports scheduled for January 1, 2027 , approaching, the Gabonese government is accelerating its efforts. On March 26, 2026, an ambitious plan was unveiled to fundamentally transform the national poultry sector.
To bridge the huge gap between consumption and production, the government is launching a strategic recruitment drive for 150 local farmers . These farmers will benefit from massive public support structured around three pillars:
The challenge is immense. Today, Gabon imports 95% of the 100,000 tons of chicken consumed annually by its population. This situation stems from the 1980s, a period when oil revenues led the country to neglect its own land in favor of massive imports.
The key figure: Food imports currently cost between 70 trillion and 80 trillion CFA francs (approximately 1.1 billion euros) per year. Recovering even half of this amount would inject unprecedented dynamism into the local economy.
The main obstacle remains the price of animal feed, which is often imported. To make Gabonese chicken competitive with foreign products, the Minister of Agriculture, Pacôme Kossy, announced the parallel development of corn and soybean crops. The objective is clear: to produce locally what the poultry eats in order to lower the final price for Gabonese consumers.
