TCHAD: Affaire de Harcèlement Sexuel : Le Procès Reporté Faute de Traducteur
The High Court of N'Djamena has postponed a sexual harassment case involving a man detained at the Klessoum prison. The decision was made due to the lack of a translator to allow for questioning the complainant.
An Unexpected Linguistic Mistake Blocks the Audience
- Hearing date: Tuesday, November 11, 2025.
- Location: High Court of N'Djamena.
- The Twist: The complainant, whose complaint had been filed by her husband, was unable to testify.
- The Reason: When questioned by the president of the court, the alleged victim revealed that she did not speak Ngambaye, Arabic, or French.
- As a result, faced with the impossibility of understanding his testimony, the court adjourned the case to a later date , to allow time for an official interpreter to be appointed.
The Defense Raises a Procedural Question
Prior to this incident, the defendant's legal team had already raised a major procedural point. The lawyer for the accused argued that the legal proceedings were inadmissible .
According to the defense, the case had already been decided by a commission on Islamic affairs before reaching the TGI.
- This commission would have applied Islamic law .
- The accused man was reportedly required to swear an oath on the Quran .
- The woman, presumed victim, was also allegedly invited to do the same in the presence of a witness .
The referral of the case therefore temporarily suspends this legal procedure, pending the conditions, including the assistance of an interpreter, being met for the continuation of the proceedings.
