Trafic de cornes de rhinocéros en Afrique du Sud : le cerveau du réseau écope d'une amende de 123 000 dollars
After a sixteen-year legal saga, the South African justice system has sealed the fate of a safari organizer considered the mastermind of a vast international rhino horn trafficking network. A court sentenced the defendant on Thursday, June 18, to pay a fine of two million rand (approximately $123,000), following an agreement reached with the prosecutor. This verdict brings to a close a trial that began in 2010 and was plagued by numerous appeals and postponements.
The case, described by experts as the world's largest investigation into the trafficking of rhino horns, was reported by the US Department of Justice as early as 2014. The culprit was identified as the mastermind of an organization that sold illegal trips to complicit hunters to kill wild rhinos.
South Africa remains the world's main sanctuary for these pachyderms, but also the primary target of poachers. In Asia, demand remains high, fueled by false beliefs attributing therapeutic properties to their horns, which fetch exorbitant prices on the black market.
This legal conclusion comes at a time when the pressure on the species remains alarming in Africa:
