Northwest Nigeria is once again in mourning. On the night of Thursday, February 19th to Friday, February 20th, 2026 , the village of Dutse Dan Ajiya , located in Zamfara State, was the target of a violent incursion carried out by armed men.

A heavy and uncertain human toll

While authorities have officially confirmed 38 deaths, local sources fear a much higher toll. Local elected official Hamisu Faru, for his part, speaks of at least 50 victims . According to his testimony, the assailants, described as "bandits," opened fire indiscriminately on residents who were desperately trying to escape the gunfire.

A difficult-to-access area

The intervention and delivery of aid were slowed by the geographical isolation of the locality.

Accessibility: The village of Dutse Dan Ajiya has very few usable access roads.
Current situation: Zamfara police spokesman Yazid Abubakar stated that calm had returned and patrols were now securing the area.
