Uranium au Niger : Niamey s'apprête à restituer sa part à Orano

In the ongoing diplomatic and industrial saga between Niger and France, a new chapter has begun. General Abdourahamane Tiani has officially announced that the transitional authorities will return to the French group Orano a portion of the uranium stocks extracted before the nationalization of the Somaïr mine.

A strategic move in the midst of a power struggle

Since Niger nationalized Somaïr—the last remaining uranium mine in operation in the country—in June 2025, relations between Niamey and Paris have been particularly strained. This decision to return the mine comes as the two sides clash in the courts and diplomatically.

Here are the key points of this announcement:

  1. The volume concerned: The Nigerien head of state proposes to return 63.4% of 156,231 tonnes of uranium.
  2. The accounting logic: This percentage corresponds exactly to the share that Orano held in the capital of Somaïr before its takeover by the State.
  3. The logistical uncertainty: While the principle of restitution has been agreed upon, the practical arrangements and the timetable for this operation remain, for the time being, unknown.

A historic partnership reduced to ashes

Long a pillar of supply for the French nuclear power plant, Niger saw its relations with the former colonial power collapse after the 2023 coup. The 2025 nationalization marked a definitive break in this strategic cooperation.

Note: This restitution appears to be an attempt to close a dispute over "pre-nationalization" assets, although overall dialogue between the two nations remains at a standstill.
