Volaille au Maroc : Un marché sous haute surveillance entre répit et incertitudes

After a period of significant turbulence, the Moroccan poultry sector appears to be recovering. While the supply of animal feed is normalizing, consumers and professionals remain vigilant regarding potential price fluctuations as Eid al-Fitr approaches.

1. End of the logistics crisis in the ports

The sector has managed to overcome the bottlenecks that paralyzed the ports of Casablanca and Jorf Lasfar over the past two months. Difficulties unloading ships carrying compound feed had raised fears of a collapse in production chains.

  1. Official intervention: At the end of January, food manufacturers had alerted several ministries to avoid a widespread shortage.
  2. Return to normal: Since the end of February, the import flow has stabilized, although the cost of some foods has increased by about 5% (now exceeding 4 DH/kg).

2. Current price situation: A real lull

While the price of a kilogram of chicken had approached 30 dirhams, prices have stabilized since mid-Ramadan.

Product / Step Current Price (Average) Previous price
Chicken (Farm) ~ 13 DH / kg -
Chicken (Details) 17 to 22 DH / kg Up to 30 DH
Live chick 5 to 6.5 DH per unit Approx. 12 DH

Mustapha El Mountasir, president of the National Association of Poultry Meat Producers, reassures: current production is sufficient to cover national demand.

3. Vigilance against speculation

Despite this stabilization, concerns persist regarding intermediaries and retailers.

  1. Seasonal risk: The approach of Eid al-Fitr could lead to slight price increases due to high demand. However, industry professionals insist that no other technical justification can be offered for raising prices.
  2. Consumers' cry for help: Noureddine Hammane, from the Moroccan Association for Consumer Protection, highlights an abnormal gap (sometimes up to 50% ) between the farm price and the final price.
“Any further increase risks further weakening the purchasing power of Moroccans, already strained by high fish and red meat prices.” — Noureddine Hammane

Key points to remember

The government is now called upon to strengthen regulation and the fight against speculation to ensure that improvements in port logistics directly benefit the average household budget.
