Port d’Abidjan : Un record historique de 46,6 millions de tonnes en 2025

The Port of Abidjan (PAA) has reached a new milestone. According to figures from Sika Finance , the Ivorian hub handled 46.6 million tons of goods in 2025, showing robust growth of 16.1% compared to the previous year (40.1 million tons). This exceptional performance consolidates its position as a leading logistics hub in West Africa.

1. The national engine running at full speed

The port's dynamism is primarily driven by the Ivorian economy. Domestic traffic has jumped by nearly 20% , rising from 28.5 to 34.2 million tons . This acceleration reflects:

  1. A rapidly expanding industrial and commercial activity.
  2. An increase in imports of raw materials and consumer goods.
  3. Continuous improvement of national logistics processes.

2. Containers: Aiming for 2 million

A key indicator of modernization, container traffic continues its forward march with 1.69 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) handled in 2025 (+3.1%).

The ambition is clear: To reach the symbolic milestone of 2 million containers by 2027 in order to establish itself as the undisputed hub in the face of regional competition.

3. A strategic corridor for the hinterland

The PAA reaffirms its role as an economic engine for landlocked countries. Transit traffic to the Sahel exploded by 34.1% , reaching 3.92 million tonnes .

  1. Focus on Mali: Trade has increased by 76% , illustrating the strength of the Abidjan-Bamako axis despite the regional context.
  2. Integration: This corridor secures the supply of Burkina Faso and Mali while generating crucial revenue for Ivory Coast.

4. Transshipment and investments

The only relative downside to the picture is that transshipment shows a slight decline of 1.9% (8.46 million tonnes), due to increased port competition in the Gulf of Guinea.

However, the long-term vision remains intact. With over 1 trillion FCFA invested since 2012, the port has transformed its infrastructure:

  1. Extension of the quays and deepening of the Vridi canal.
  2. Acquisition of state-of-the-art handling equipment.
  3. Digitalization of operations for greater efficiency.

Key figures (2025)

Indicator Volume Evolution / 2024
Total Traffic 46.6 million tonnes +16.1%
National Traffic 34.2 million tonnes +20.0%
Transit (Hinterland) 3.92 million tonnes +34.1%
Containers 1.69 million units +3.1%

In conclusion: More than just a transport platform, the Port of Abidjan is establishing itself in 2025 as the true barometer of the economic health of Côte d'Ivoire and an engine of integration for the entire sub-region.
