A tragic workplace accident claimed the lives of two people on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, in the Abobo Dokoui district of Abidjan. The victims were fatally electrocuted while working near an OLA gas station.

An immediate and fatal electric shock

The tragedy occurred in broad daylight before the eyes of several helpless witnesses. According to initial reports, the two workers (aged 33 and 43) were working at height when they moved their metal scaffolding. The imposing structure then came into direct contact with a high-voltage power line (HTA type) running above the area.

The ensuing electric shock was extremely violent. Both men died instantly. Very quickly, a crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene, overcome with shock and dismay.

An investigation by the relevant services is expected to carry out the usual investigations, determine the exact circumstances of the tragedy and establish responsibilities.

This accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with working near electrical infrastructure. Experts emphasize that high-voltage lines pose a deadly risk, even without direct contact: the mere proximity of a metallic object can generate a fatal electric arc.

Prevention is at the heart of CIE's priorities

Faced with the recurring nature of these risks, the Ivorian Electricity Company (CIE) is implementing a rigorous prevention strategy. The company organizes an average of 300 awareness sessions per year for the general public and professionals (partners, students, law enforcement).

These campaigns are particularly intensified during the rainy season and the end-of-year holidays, periods conducive to incidents. The objective remains the same: to instill a genuine culture of safety to prevent such tragedies from recurring.
