The Ivorian government has reaffirmed its unwavering support for economic actors following the devastating fire that ravaged the China Mall supermarket in Marcory Ibis on the night of June 17-18, 2026. On Monday, June 22, a delegation from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Handicrafts visited the site to assess the extent of the damage and demonstrate national solidarity.

Although the fire caused no human casualties , the material and financial losses are colossal. A large part of the building was destroyed and the merchandise stocks were reduced to ashes, severely impacting the local retail sector.

A government delegation on the ground

Mandated by Minister Kalil Konaté, the delegation was led by his Chief of Staff, Assoua Raymond Laurent . On the site located on Boulevard Félix Houphouët-Boigny, the situation was dire: weakened structures, charred goods and devastated facilities.

“We have come first and foremost to offer the compassion of the ministry and, beyond that, of the entire Government of Côte d’Ivoire. We have also come to inquire about the situation in order to discuss with the owners the measures to be taken for the next steps,” said Mr. Assoua.

He stated that a comprehensive assessment of the damage is underway and that the results of the official investigation are awaited to determine the exact origin of the fire.

Recalling that the China Mall is an "important link in domestic trade" , he assured that the authorities would remain mobilized alongside the managers and employees.

Resilience, reconstruction and enhanced security

Faced with this tragedy which highlights the vulnerability of large commercial infrastructures, the State's rapid reaction aims to reassure investors and consumers.

The Technical Director of the China Mall Côte d'Ivoire group, Dosso Ibrahim Jean-Yves , expressed his gratitude to the authorities:

“We would like to thank the Government and the President of the Republic for this solidarity. Even though we are victims of disaster, we see that we are not alone.”

Post-disaster priorities:

1. Support for reconstruction: Technical and institutional support to help owners quickly restart their businesses.
2. Job preservation: Support measures for workers affected by temporary layoffs.
3. Strengthening security: Modernization of fire prevention and protection systems in all large retail outlets across the country.

While the fire has temporarily brought this flagship of modern commerce to a standstill, the determination of the authorities and leaders remains unwavering. The challenge now is to rebuild faster, while establishing stricter safety standards for the future.
