The digitalization of commerce has profoundly changed consumer habits, turning social networks into veritable commercial showcases. While these platforms offer real opportunities, they can also serve as a breeding ground for fraudulent schemes , as revealed by a recent case of fake sales of imported furniture .

The investigation began after a complaint from Ms. BM , a victim of online fraud. Attracted by advertisements offering quality furniture at attractive prices, she engaged in several exchanges with the seller, reassured by polished visuals and a convincing sales pitch. She then made several payments via Mobile Money . Despite this, none of the items were delivered, and her attempts to contact her again went unanswered.

Faced with this situation, the victim contacted the Cybercrime Prevention Platform (PLCC) . The investigations carried out by this organization, a technical center of the National Cybersecurity Agency of France (ANSSI) , revealed a well-organized modus operandi .

The accused, KP , aged 25, used several social media accounts to post his ads. He demanded deposits or full payments, sent fake receipts , provided a false location , and then broke off all contact with his victims after receiving the funds.

The financial loss is estimated at over 10 million CFA francs , with 21 complaints registered at this stage of the proceedings. The alleged perpetrator has been brought before the competent judicial authorities for online fraud and fraudulent use of identity information , in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 2013-451 of June 19, 2013, concerning the fight against cybercrime .

Authorities are urging internet users to be vigilant , recommending that they verify the identity of sellers, avoid advance payments without guarantees, and favour secure sales channels.
