The Abidjan Military Court handed down a harsh sentence to a senior non-commissioned officer for extortion and violation of orders. This severe punishment reaffirms the zero-tolerance policy towards corruption within the armed forces.

An illegal check caught red-handed

The events took place on January 16, 2026. Adjutant KKD had set up an unofficial checkpoint without any official authorization or proper ticketing system. It was at this makeshift checkpoint that he intercepted two motorcyclists riding without helmets.

What the soldier didn't know was that he was being filmed. Agents specializing in monitoring and documenting extortion recorded the scene. The video evidence and the investigation formally demonstrated that a sum of 5,000 CFA francs had been demanded and received by the warrant officer to turn a blind eye to the offense.

The "compassion" defense was rejected by the court.

Called to the stand on June 4, 2026, the defendant attempted to justify his actions. While admitting to pocketing the money, he claimed that the motorcyclists themselves had insisted on giving him various sums to prevent their vehicle from being impounded. According to him, he ultimately accepted the 5,000 FCFA out of pure "compassion."

This argument carried little weight with the judges. The court reiterated that a law enforcement officer cannot, under any circumstances, accept money outside the legal framework, and even less so negotiate a financial settlement under duress for a traffic violation.

A harsh sentence and public humiliation

Found guilty under Articles 474, 484 and 559 of the Penal Code, Warrant Officer KKD received an exemplary sentence:

  1. 5 years imprisonment (with arrest warrant and immediate incarceration);
  2. 500,000 CFA francs fine ;
  3. Mandatory posting of the sentence in all military barracks in Ivory Coast.
The Tribunal's message: This verdict, beyond individual wrongdoing, serves as a solemn warning. It reminds all members of the defense and security forces that integrity and discipline are non-negotiable. While the law protects the public, it is applied with the utmost rigor to those charged with enforcing it.
