Yamoussoukro : Les taxis en grève suite à l'interdiction du gaz butane
The Ivorian political capital, Yamoussoukro, awoke to tension on Monday, February 2, 2026. Communal taxi drivers launched a 72-hour strike to protest against stricter controls on the use of butane gas as fuel.
Although common in Yamoussoukro for reasons of cost-effectiveness, the use of butane gas in combustion engines is strictly prohibited by Ivorian law. Authorities have intensified enforcement since the beginning of the year, targeting two main groups:
The legal framework is unequivocal. According to Law No. 92-470 of July 30, 1992 (Article 3, paragraph 4), any delivery of petroleum products outside of approved facilities is an offense.

Before moving to the crackdown and seizure phase (thousands of bottles have already been confiscated), the government conducted a broad awareness campaign. The main argument remains safety : makeshift transfers and unauthorized engine modifications are the direct cause of numerous vehicle fires on the road.
Authorities are today calling on the public to be vigilant and report violations, reminding them that "driving on gas is a dangerous and strictly prohibited practice".
