Sonia Abbruzzo, a 49-year-old Montreal woman, was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in prison for subjecting a 21-year-old woman to a living hell. For six months in 2022, the accused turned her own daughter's friend into a virtual slave, forcing her into prostitution and to sleep outside her LaSalle home.
Judge Jean-Jacques Gagné emphasized the offender's "absolute" responsibility, describing a vicious system of manipulation. In addition to sexual exploitation, the victim was stripped of her clothing, isolated from her family, and forced to perform domestic chores without access to basic hygiene.
She lost 30 kg during this period. Sonia Abbruzzo pleaded guilty last May to human trafficking and fraud. The court also noted her violent behavior in detention, where she terrorizes her fellow inmates.
