Carton rouge pour un arbitre de l'élite : une fraude aux billets d'avion sanctionnée
French football is reeling after a Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 referee was convicted of embezzling €29,000 . In October 2025, the Bastia criminal court ruled on this sophisticated fraud case, which has tarnished the image of the refereeing profession.
The mechanism of fraud
To boost his income, the referee had set up a "double ticketing" system for his official trips:
- Initial purchase: He booked airline tickets at full price.
- Reimbursement: The French Football Federation (FFF) reimbursed him these sums upon presentation of supporting documents.
- Substitution: The referee would then cancel the expensive tickets in order to buy cheap ones, discreetly pocketing the difference.
This scheme, repeated over several seasons, was judged by the justice system to be an intentional maneuver.
Judicial and sporting sanctions
The authorities' response was immediate and severe:
- On the criminal side: A six-month suspended prison sentence. Although the person concerned has repaid the sums owed, he has decided to appeal, his lawyer arguing simple "administrative malfunctions".
- On the sporting front: The Federal Arbitration Commission stood firm. The official was banned for life from May 2024 and given a ten-year licensing ban .
