The 1500m short-track speed skating quarter-final turned into a nightmare last Friday. Polish skater Kamila Sellier suffered a horrific injury after being struck in the face by a competitor's blade.

A dramatic turn of events

With five laps remaining in the sixth heat, the 25-year-old skater lost her balance on a turn. During her fall, she was accidentally struck in the left eye by another athlete's skate.

Interruption and sanctions

The seriousness of Sellier's condition necessitated the immediate cessation of the competition to allow his evacuation on a stretcher to the medical services.

Responsibility: American Kristen Santos-Griswold was deemed responsible for the fall by officials.
As a result, the American skater was disqualified from the event.
