Xavier Emmanuelli, founder of the Samu social (emergency social services), has died at the age of 87.

Xavier Emmanuelli , a major figure in humanitarian action and solidarity in France and around the world, died this Sunday at the age of 87 following a sudden illness, "probably cardiac", according to the Samu social .

A commitment to serving the most vulnerable

  1. Founder of the Samu Social: Trained as an anesthesiologist and intensive care physician, he created the Paris Samu Social in 1993 to provide assistance and guide homeless and extremely vulnerable people towards housing. He then expanded this work by creating the Samu Social International in 1998.
  2. Co-founder of Doctors Without Borders (MSF): He was also one of the co-founders of this organization which received the Nobel Peace Prize.
  3. Political career: He served as Secretary of State for Emergency Humanitarian Action from 1995 to 1997.

Tribute to an "exceptional personality"

The International Social Emergency Medical Service paid tribute to the memory of its honorary president, who "marked the history of solidarity."

In a statement, the organization paid "tribute to this exceptional individual for his unwavering commitment to the association which he presided over for more than 25 years and whose battles he championed."

The president of Samu Social International, Jacques Carles, expressed the organization's sadness: "Today, we are in mourning."
