Escalade diplomatique : l'Équateur multiplie par 10 la taxe sur le pétrole colombien
Tensions are rising between Quito and Bogota. In the context of an open trade war, Ecuador announced a radical decision on Monday, January 26, 2026: the royalty for transporting Colombian crude oil via the Ecuadorian pipeline (SOTE) is increasing from $3 to $30 per barrel , a staggering rise of 900% .
This measure, confirmed by Energy Minister Inés Manzano, directly targets the Colombian state-owned oil company Ecopetrol . It is part of a series of reciprocal reprisals between the two neighbors.
The Trans-Ecuadorian Pipeline System (SOTE) is a major asset for Quito. Last November, this pipeline transported approximately 10,300 barrels of Colombian oil daily. By heavily taxing this transit, Ecuador is hitting its neighbor at the heart of its economy, risking further weakening a regional economy already under strain.
Contextual note: This crisis marks a severe turning point in bilateral relations, transforming a historic logistical cooperation into a veritable weapon of political pressure.
